Monday 1st July
We left Budapest this morning for our next destination Ljubljana! It was a long but great day of travel, infact it was seven hours on the bus. I've come to really enjoy our bus journeys. There was no border control this time and the countryside was stunning! It was so beautiful, the world is such a stunning place, just rolling hills and fields of green and periodiclly passing through little towns. It looks like the Swiss countryside in a way, it's stunning!
We crossed into Slovenia and a few hours later arrived to their capital city Ljubljana, our home for the next three nights. We crossed the outskirts of the city where the bus station was and in through to the Old Town to find our accommodation.
Our accommodation is amazing!! It is close to the centre on the old town and right on the river! And we literally booked it this morning! Yep that's right, this morning, as in today! That is definitely the most last minute we've left booking accommodation!
It is such a cute place, it's in a beautiful building with an old facade but upkept nicely inside right up on the top floor. It was essentially a couples backpackers, it was soo cute and absolutely perfect for what we needed! We had a double room with a bed and a roof window, then there were two shared bathrooms on the floor and a communal kitchen. It was so cool!
Andddd the best bit, they'd left us little plastic slippers for the bathroom!!
It was super hot here as well and the accommodation was particularly hot being an almost loft in the top of the building, but luckily we had a little fan to help!
Once we dumped our bags we headed out to explore. It is such a beautiful town! With the colourful buildings with their unique architecture lining the curving river with outdoor cafes and bars, lots of cute bridges connecting both sides and the greenery!
It is so beautiful, we both fell in love with the city straight away!
We found a Spar and you know what that means, yep veggie lasagne for dinner!!!
We had our little dinner back at our amazing accom and had an early night. We weren't asleep for long before we were woken by the sound of fireworks! We peeked out of our roof window and watched the display! What a welcome!
Tuesday 2nd July
We woke up to another scorcher of day and the fan wasn't doing much but pushing hot air around the room. The next thing we know the incredibly friendly guy who runs the place came and brought us a portable aircon! Amazing!
We headed out to have more of a walk around and found ourselves a Milna, our Croatian bakery chain. We bought ourselves some lunch pastries and popped into the spar to grab a cold drink and then sat in some shade down by the river for our lunch, watching the world go by.
We then decided to go and visit the castle on top on the hill. So we started the long steep climb up and let me tell you the struggle was realllll! It was upwards of 31degrees today and that makes climbing a steep hill harddd!
We made it to the top woohoo! And after dousing our heads in a bit of water to cool down we found our way around and into the castle grounds. It was really cool and we had views over Ljubljana.
There was also a park/forest/Vineyard area up here, we wandered through part of the park/forest and came across an art exhibition in there and then continued on for a while until we realised the vineyards were just way too far away in this heat and headed back down to the town.
We collapsed in front of our little aircon in our room and spent the rest of the afternoon hiding from the intense heat. Later on it started to get dark and we heard the crash of thunder and then it started to pour! We quickly jumped up trying to get the roof window closed as the aircon tube had to be put out the window! The storm was hugggeeee and broke the heat!
When we ventured out again after the storm had stopped the temperature had gone from 31 earlier in the day to 18!! The town was so pretty in the evening light after the storm.
Wednesday 3rd July
We got up early today to go out to Lake Bled!
We crossed town and bought our bus ticket and realised we could make an earlier bus than we thought so sprinted as fast as we could to the bus station and managed to get on the bus! Woohoo! Good start to the day!
The journey to the small town of Bled took us about an hour and half but it was so worth it! It was such a cute town and the lake was absolutely stunning!
We walked through the sweet town down to the lake and it was spectacular, just like all the postcards and photos that you see! It was breathtaking!
We walked around and up a hill through some forest to a castle that was situated on the rockface of a huge hill! It was super hot again today but we climbed all the way to the top only to find out it wasn't free to go inside anymore! That's ok I think it's honestly more impressive from the outside! We found a sneakily little area a little ways along from the castle to put the drone up to see it from another perspective.
After walking around the trails up around the castle and marvelling at it for a while we made our way back down to the town and got ourselves some bakery goodies and a cold drink, we then took them down to the lake and sat by the waters edge in some shade for lunch. It was so delightful.
After lunch we spent the next couple of hours walking around the lake, taking in this natural beauty. It is so stunning and breathtaking. The beautiful blue water with the little monastery island in the middle and mountains in the background and the castle on the rock-face, ahh all of it together was unbelievable! I think pictures will do it more justice than my words could so here we go!
Once we'd completed our loop around the lake we sat just soaking it all in for a while until it was time to head back for the bus. It was ridiculously hot again today and like yesterday the sky had started to come over dark so we suspected that we might get another storm. Well literally just as we stepped onto the bus it started to absolutely bucket down! We were lucky to get on the bus too, it was completely full and we left a bunch of people behind to wait in the rain!
We had a cosy bus ride back to Ljubljana where it had stopped raining so we spent some time wandering around the gorgeous town. We've both really fallen in love with this little part of the world.
We got ourselves a veggie lasagne again and had a cosy evening in our little room after such an exciting day.
